Was looking for any advice and info on it from a first hand experience, does it make your eyes hurt? Was it covered by insurance? How bad were your eyes? Did it correct your sight by much? How was the overall experience?

my mom did a couple of years ago. her sight was pretty bad and the day after her sergery she could look out the hotel window w/ out glasses or anything and see things. she now has to use reading glasses, but she’s 50, so it’s age.

Yes, well, I had PRK. Lasik is supposedly less painful but it leaves a flap that can come undone 10 years later. PRK takes an extra week or so to heal, but to me was worth it, and the extra pain. Pain meds don’t seem to work on me like they do on others, but as much as it hurt, it was worth it. I grew up on the ugly 80s thick wide glasses the govt gave poor kids. I got sick of spending money on contacts… The Air Force paid for the surgery. I now have 20/20 to 20/15 vision. The only side effects after the initial pain wears off, are that eyes are dry and you need to use drops. After 6 months or so you hardly need drops, but they say to keep using them for a year. I’m almost at a year now, and maybe use drops once a day.
The procedure involves them holding your eyelids open with a metal device while you lay on your back, putting pain-killer drops in your eye, and using a rotating-head-toothbrush type thing to scrape off the protective layer of your eye. You stare at a dot while the laser does its job. Try not to move your eye, but if you do, don’t worry. The laser is attached to an advanced computer that can cut off the laser before you move your eye. I didn’t move my eyes. Each eye took about 30 seconds. It was uncomfortable and annoying, but I could see right away. Vision gets worse as your eyes adjust to the surgery and heal… it takes a few weeks to get really good vision and a few months to get to 20/20, but now I’m totally without glasses and worry free.
They say that if you have surgery, chances are you’ll need reading glasses when you get older. Well, I’d have needed glasses anyway, so for now I’m free of them.
