What to expect after cataract surgery?
Question by Kayla: What to expect after cataract surgery?
I’m sure that some of the people or grandparents of people on here have had cataract surgery. Were those surgeries successful? Were there any complications? Was the person able to see when the bandages were first taken off the day after?
The reason I’m asking this question is because I’m 16 and having cataract surgery in less than two weeks. My cataract developed due to severe eye trauma after a car accident, and right now I have close to no vision. I have slight vision in my peripherals, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to see the day after my surgery.

Unfortunately, the general experience of most people who have had cataract surgery does not apply when there is a history of ocular trauma. Many people will say that cataract surgery “was a piece of cake,” or that their vision was better before they even left the operating room. However, most of these people are at least 50 years old and do not have a history of trauma.
Both youth and a history of trauma increase the risk of surgery. Younger eyes tend to be at a higher risk of retinal detachment after surgery.
Ocular trauma can increase the risk of something going wrong during surgery as the surgeon really has no idea how stable the ocular structures are until s/he is “in the eye.” Additionally, eyes with a history of trauma may be at higher risk of intraocular pressure spike (glaucoma), and macular edema (swelling of the retina). Treating these conditions can be challenging.
Even if the surgery is a “piece of cake,” the final vision will depend on whether the trauma affected the cornea, optic nerve or retina. Corneal damage can often be addressed with a corneal transplant. However, significant optic nerve or retinal damage may not be treatable.
Essentially, ocular trauma is a bit of a wild card. Manage your expectations accordingly.
